2500km’s… 5 days… 3 community education sessions… 1 live radio interview…

Sunday: Kimberley – Upington

Surely the easiest “hop” of my travels, this leg was plain sailing… Just about 4 hours drive on relatively well maintained roads, it was a breeze. A comfortable night rest set the platform for the next day’s trip…

Monday: Upington – Pella – Springbok

Waking up before dawn, packed breakfast in hand, we headed to Pella for our first education session in Namaqua. Passing through the somewhat green towns of Keimoes and Kakamas, we headed into the barren lands towards the West Coast. With a quick stop in Pofadder we headed to Pella, a settlement founded in the early 1800s by missionaries and abandoned various times due to drought. Although it’s technically an oasis and only 20-odd kilometers from the Orange River (and Namibian border), the hardship shows on faces. Lines ingrained, the waters of the ancient river slowly eroding the rock-hard expressions. But, what a bunch of friendly people! After a short wait in the heat and a 2 hour meeting we headed for Springbok, the capital of Namaqua.

Tuesday: Springbok – Komaggas – Kleinsee – Calvinia

Yikes! A short notice invite from the community radio station. They’ve gotten wind of our whistle-stop tour and, obviously short of some content, invite me over for a quick chat. 07:30 Live on air… My first live interview…

Radio

That done, we head out, through, over and then down the rocky hills that form the escarpment. Komaggas, yet another small settlement, comes alive as word has spread of the “travelers” from Kimberley have come to their doorstep. Then I hear a story that rips out my heart and leaves my soul broken: a child, taken away from her drug addicted prostitute mother… Then from her alcoholic grandmother… Now in the care of an elderly lady who can barely walk, nevermind care for the 7month old when she starts crawling and walking…

DETOUR! We’re 50km from the coast… I can smell the atlantic on the air… Kleinsee here we come.

A sign looms: “Private Road – Trespassers will be prosecuted”. We continue. It’s a poorly maintained gravel road. Just under an hour later we dip our toes into the icy waters along a narrow strip of beach. Our squeals matched by the only other souls in sight: sea gulls.

Through 2 security checkpoints and another poor gravel road to Springbok, then the long trek down the N7 to Van Rhynsdorp. Up the crazy ass pass onto the plateau. Countless stop-and-goes and we finally check into our accommodation for the night in Calvinia.

SURPRISE! A friend from Kimberley happens to be checked into the same guesthouse! A beer or two later and we call it a night.

Wednesday: Calvinia – Williston – Sutherland – Carnarvon

Already saddle weary, we’re up at sparrow’s fart, heading down the road to Williston. We’re meeting colleagues who assure us their route to Sutherland is quicker and in better condition than the direct one from Calvinia.

I’d hate to see the original route I planned. This “better” route was terrible. Eventually we make it to “Sidderland” [read it in afrikaans]. A coke can, loaded in Calvinia, has worn through and coated the back of the bakkie in sticky (but yummy) spray. Oh well.

I tease the locals… “I was told it snows here… Where’s the snow… I don’t believe it ever snows up here.”

Sutherland

Session complete. Fraserburg, here we come… Wait! DETOUR! Come on… SALT (SAOO) is “only, like, on top of that hill.” A kind word and colgate smile get us up to the top, unescorted. Score! Down we go, onto another gravel road, over wildlife grates and dodging dongas. Stop in Fraserburg, audit the office, and hit the dream gravel road to Carnarvon. Seriously! It was a pleasure to drive! Book in. Supper at “Die Meerkat” [always awesome]. Sleep. Sweet sleep. I feel my bed hopping as the bakkie did almost all day.

Thursday: Carnarvon – Kimberley

Finally! The last stretch! A timely hopped-up, caffeine-enriched, sugar-overloaded energy drink later and a quick fast-foward later and I’m holding my smiling baby boy!

What a week! Good to be back home!

Okay, sure, I know… I’ve been neglecting my blog.  You’re all surely missing my bombardment of insights and such [like I’d believe it].  There are reasons excuses  reasons, as I’m about to explain:

  1. Work:  Between the constant travelling of vast distances in the Northern Cape, the hours of admin, countless media enquiries and projects, and the hundreds of newsletters I could probably have found some free time to maintain this highly professional and popular blog.  But that would be without the next point…
  2. Drewness:  Yip, I’m a dad! Andrew Peter Evans (Drew) – named after his two grandfathers – was born on 12/12/2012 and weighed 3.1kg.  So in those few precious hours of free time I’m able to schedule a week [side thought: If you schedule free time, is it still free time?!] I would much rather spend cuddling and playing with Drewness… that’s of course, between all the nappy changes, feedings and tantrums.
  3. New house:  We’ve bought a house! Not a mansion, but definitely a comfortable place.  When not at work, or paying attention to the awesomeness that has sprung from my loins, I spend most of my time doing stuff around the house… and garden!  Since sustainable and responsible living will become ever more important, we want Drewness to grow up knowing how important it is… hello vegetable garden! (more of that in coming posts)

So ja… these 3 things can’t really be used as excuses … so I’ll try my best to keep posting!

“You’re the only white person, besides the farmer, I’ve ever spoken to,” the 70-something mmemogolo told me.

It came as a shock. One wouldn’t think that this could occur in the modern world, in a village within spitting distance of the N14 near Upington.

She tells me she’s only ever left the village once, and that was only to go to Upington. I was left speechless. Amazed, I sat in silence. This declaration made me realise how blessed I am to be able to travel to various countries and to have had the opportunities to have literally travelled to every corner of our great country.

“Thank you,” she says as I help her to her feet. “I will tell my children about the kind white man.”

Although great care has been taken to compile this schedule from a combination of SASCOC and London 2012 (LOCOG), a few mistakes may have creeped in.  Please let me know if, and when, you find them. Kindly note that the Wheelchair tennis starting times will only be released the evening prior to each event. For a better understanding of the classifications check the BBC’s guide.

Please note that the times are approximate.  Times in (brackets) are according to London 2012. Plain times are according to SASCOC. All times are SA time.

The day of the start of the London 2012 Paralympics is fast approaching… As the hype of our 3rd most successful Olympics starts to wane, we have an opportunity to watch our lads and gals bring home even more gold!

Keep an eye on my Facebook feed as well as twitter for the TeamSA schedule… I’m still working through the complete schedule, matching our athletes to their events and starting times.

With an invested interest in the “Parallel Olympics”, I will be glued to the TV when my cousin takes to the field in the Javelin event. He’s ranked 5th in the World as he enters the biggest stage, well poised to bring home a medal! Go Derik!

The newest political franchise in SA rugby, the EP Kings… Yes, political. Brought into being by the Sport Ministry because of the lack of high tier rugby in the Eastern Province.

The Golden Lions… The white jerseys with the red hoop, reminiscent of the days when Transvaal dominated the South African rugby scene.

Now someone explain the sense to me in giving a brand new franchise, the Kings, a spot in the Super Rugby competition at the expense of the Currie Cup champions.

The Lions have been plagued by injuries in the early start of the 2012 Super Rugby tournament leading to a third of their entire franchise squad being out over an extended period. The last few games they played have been some of the most entertaining in the entire competition.

Let’s just ignore the whole “why Australia shouldn’t even be part of the competition” argument after their only finals qualifying team qualified due to leading the Aus conference (they wouldn’t have qualified otherwise).

South Africa is touted as having the best provincial rugby competition in the world: The Currie Cup. It’s steeped in tradition, has been the proving ground of Bok greats, and has provided some of the most memorable moments in modern rugby. And yet the Champions are, supposedly, being kicked out of Super Rugby because of broadcasting rights and National politics?

I reckon a play-off should be played. A mini competition, if you like, between the bottom 3 ranking SA sides in Super Rugby and the Kings. All games on “neutral” turf. With the top 2 guaranteed a spot in 2013, and the bottom 2 playing a last “decider” game. Imagine if it was the Bulls, or even the Sharks facing an effective relegation. What would happen then?

Even the Griquas would be a better option than the Kings for the 2013 Super Rugby competition. They have been performing well over the last few years.

So effectively, my say is said. I doubt anyone will listen, and even read this far… But I needed to get it off my chest.

So here I am, filling in another form. I get to the ethnicity question: White, African, Coloured, Indian, Other. I’m tempted to tick “Other” box.

What does race matter? I’m a white skinned African, proud of our country and continent! Born and raised in Africa.

I’ve had the opportunity to go to school with, work with and be friends with people from various cultures and the main thing is: we’re not that different. Whether Korean, Zimbabwean, Namibian, German, French, Bulgarian or South African it doesn’t matter. Black, white, coloured, indian, asian…

What’s wrong with the grey area? Why does it always have to be Black and White. 18 years on surely we have passed that stage of grouping people according to race? One would think that!

It seems to me that there are a handful of people, throughout the country, across all cultures that like to play the colour card. I understand old habits die hard, but surely we, the younger generation who actually barely remember Apartheid, can put that all behind us.
